Food-of-the-Day

I had an IMPOSSIBLE to finish Geology test!!! There were 30 MCQs and EIGHT "short" answer questions! Nevermind, all I need is a pass.

I bought a great dinner (Chirashi - raw fish/seafood on top of sushi rice with salad and miso soup) from some nice Japanese restaurant! I also bought butter caramel iced cappuccino, 1/2 dozen small donuts and a ham & cheese tea biscuit from Tim Horton's! Had dinner in the common room with Audrey and Huixin and we played air hockey! Damn fun!!!

.

“Suicide is not chosen;
it happens when pain exceeds resources for coping with pain.”

I know not many of you agree with the statement above but I guess it's a refreshing perspective and somehow offers a way out of suicide. It breaks it down into components. Components that you can tackle by (1) increasing resources to cope with pain and/or (2) decreasing the pain. How effective do you think it would be to tell a suicidal person that suicide is a choice? I bet he's heard it a million times and would once more make a difference?
People turn to suicide to seek relief from pain. Relief is a feeling. Just what are you going to feel when you're 6 feet under?

Acquaintance-of-the-Day

Hmm.. Today is the first time I greeted someone in UOT who was not from NUS! Haha. Ok, a bit lame but it's nice to actually found that you've got acquainted with one of the locals. Ok, the person is a female in case you're wondering. Anyway, the security guards at my residence look rather fit! There's a nice young security guard here and we've talked a couple of times, especially when I go to the gym or for a jog. He helped me open my door today as my card got de-magnetized again! Nice guy! Can I import him to Singapore? LOL. Ok, more motivation to excercise in the morning.
Anyway, there's air hockey in the common room in my residence. There's really air blowing out from the board. Cool. Rather smooth!

I finally checked my grades for my Psychology test! 60/72 for MCQs and short answers! That's 83.33% (the average is 74.44%). Yay. The weightage of that test is like 46%. Jaime is happy. Can I switch universities? The stress level is so much lower.. that should be good for my health!!! If only my grades here could be computed into my CAP in NUS!

Rafting-of-the-Day

28 July...
Spent the day whitewater rafting down the Ottawa River! I was in Quebec but all the time I thought I was in Ottawa. Anyway, we had 8 of us in the raft including our guide, Steve. We shot 12 rapids I think of which the highest level was Dragon's Tongues (a level 4 or 5 rapid). Dropped into the water once (only 3 people were left on the raft). Our raft was practically vertical with me at the front of the raft diving in and that was where I sat. The falling in was quick and I couldn't remember it but I ended up beneath the raft. Cool (pun intended) experience.

In the evening, we camped at Base Camp and Steve came over to talk to us, cleared our plates and served us dessert. It was supposed to be self-service... So sweet of HIM!!!

29 July...
Spent the day swimming in the COLD, NUMBING river, sun tanning and basically lazing around on the grass. Got to meet a couple from England (Will and Alice) and a guy from Switerzerland.

Shopping-of-the-Day

I finally had some time to go down to Eaton today! Spent the day reading my Geology textbook! In the evening, I went shopping at Eaton. I bought a Levis LADIES shirt. I've seen it twice before but finally decided to get it! Anyway, decided to eat at the food court today - beef steak salad in a taco shell with sweet onion dressing! I've only got about 22 more days!

I need to explore:
  • Kensington
  • St Lawrence
  • The supermarket at Korean Town
  • Canadian Tire
  • Shop some more at Eaton!

But for now, I shall be departing soon for Whitewater Rafting at Ottawa!!!

Feeling excellent-er everyday! (",)

Lyrics-of-the-Day

Courtesy of DJ2:

Oceans apart, day after day
And she slowly go insane
She read your words, on the screen
But it doesn’t stop the pain
If she sees you next to never
How can she say forever

Wherever you go, whatever you do,
She will be right there waiting for you
Whatever it takes, or how her heart breaks
She will be right there waiting for you

She took for granted, all the times
That she thought would last somehow
She hears the gunshot, she see the holes
But she can’t bear to shoot you now

Oh can’t you see it DJ,
Jaime is going crazy…

Wherever you go, whatever you do,
She will be right there waiting for you
Whatever it takes, or how her heart breaks
She will be right there waiting for you

She wonders how she can survive
This bullying…
But in the end if you are with her
She’ll take the chance

Oh can’t you see it DJ,
Jaime is going crazy…

Wherever you go, whatever you do,
She will be right there waiting for you
Whatever it takes, or how her heart breaks
She will be right there waiting for you

Walking-of-the-Day

We spent about 3.5h walking along Younge St today! Bought some souvenirs! Hmm..

Hmm.. Today's dinner is kajor` again! However, this time I used chicken noodle soup powder as seasoning! Water was contributed from the frozen food and starch from the potatoes and thus, a stew was created! I'm ingenius!

Words-of-the-Day

pQ's 3 magical words... "Hurry come back!!!"

Dinner was capsicums, frozen beef, frozen seafood (squid, prawn, etc), potatoes, BBQ sauce and this time with chilli bean sauce! Nice! (",) I should name this.. Hmm.. kajor` (that's rojak spelt backwards). Ok, so I had kajor` for dinner!
Today's lecture was on memory! Very interesting... Hmm.. Freud has a weird theory on Infantile Amnesia (why people can't remember stuff when they were infants). He thinks that it's due to the thoughts of infants being erotic and there is a need to repress memories of such TRAUMATIC events so there's no access to these memories when we grow up. HMM.. Funny guy. If it's true... POOR KIDS!

Food-of-the-Day

After my Geology lecture, Izzati and I headed to Chinatown to buy raw food! I bought capsicums, frozen beef, frozen seafood (squid, prawn, etc), potatoes, BBQ sauce and chilli bean sauce! I cooked all these with BBQ sauce for dinner! It tasted GREAT! Fresh food. YEAH. Oh and I bought more cherries.. couldn't resist!
Attended 2 Psychological experiments today. One was on demographics and the other was on memory, perception and emotion. Hmm..
Anyway, I got back my test results for Geology! 82% (class average is 77%)! Even scored full marks on a short answer question (10/10)! What an encouraging lecturer - she wrote "Great!" and drew a smiley face! I haven't seen that in a while I think! Heehee.. If only I could slack like that and get such results in NUS. OH WELL. Did I mention that the results were out in ONE day after the test, complete with class averages and histogram? Talk about efficiency!
Hmm, Monika crashed my room to discuss our whitewater rafting trip!!! Hehe. Well well! What a long discussion! SLEEPY!!!

Street-of-the-Day

Chess in the middle of the streets?
The guy in black is a chess pro from Peru! He's damn good!
C$5 to for a round of chess with him!Well, I guess the term "eye candy" is international.
Heehee.
My hp (2nd from left) is like the "IN" thing here now!
It's almost obsolete in SG!
A couple of weeks back, some guy drew this with chalk.
HDB???
Sangria - fine drink..
Duck breast..

The street of the day is Yonge Street - the loooooonnnnggeessstttt street in the world!!! Audrey and I ate at some bistro & bar and had duck breast for dinner. Petite portions with exquisite taste and texture. I ordered sangria as well, great drink! Not the cheapest place to eat - liken it to dinner at a restaurant a grade up from Swensen's in Singapore. The liquor here is cheaper than in SG though.

Oh, I had my Psychology test (academic test, not to evaluate if I'm insane or something). It was a happy test! Guess what, the topics here will NOT BE REPEATED in the final exams. The test is worth 46%!

I think I have bed bug bites (I can see 10 bites in a localized area) from New York. Seems to have so many insects in New York but I hardly find any in Toronto!

Counting Down the Days by Natalie Imbruglia

You were right.
And I don't want to be here if you're gonna be there.
Was that supposed to happen?
I'll hold tight.
I'll remember to smile.
Though it has been a while.
And without you does it matter?

There's no room.
No place to start.
When our souls are apart.

I want to travel through time.
See your surprise.
I'd hold you so tight.
I'm counting down the days tonight.
I just want to be a million miles away from here.
I'm counting down the days.

How've you been?
It's just the usual here.
And days are feeling like years.
And every day's without you.
Now I cry just a little too much when I think of your touch
And everything about you.

I feel cold.
I'm in the dark.
When our souls are apart.

I want to travel through time.
See your surprise.
I'd hold you so tight.
I'm counting down the days tonight.
I just want to be a million miles away from here.

I want to travel through time.
See your surprise.
I'd hold you so tight.
I'm counting down the days tonight.
I just want to be a million miles away from here.
I'm counting down the days.

I'm counting down the days.
I'm counting down the days.
I'm gonna be your surprise.
I'm gonna hold you so tight.

Yeah!

A million miles away from here.

The beginning and the end. It's funny how people may want to end their lives at the beginning. Is this symbolic? That people find the process of life insignificant and should have ended it at the beginning, or is it because the beginning signifies some form of meaning in their lives and in that meaning, there is some form of attachment to this world? Am I making sense?
Are some memories worth having? Memories are sometimes a distortion of the truth, but it is our truth. It's what we believe in and what we build our lives upon. Are we who we think we really are? There will always be a part of us that we cannot understand. And what we cannot understand, we usually fear. When pushed to the limits, what will you do? What are you capable of? Are you as steady and sound as you think you are? Are you in control? You just haven't been in the appropriate situation.
Too much dreaming. You keep reaching for the stars but figured all you wanted was solid ground when you've lost sight of the ground. Simple, basic needs. You can't always get what you want and these are usually the simplest yet most complex aspects of life. The easiest to receive yet almost impossible to achieve...

City-of-the-Day

Harold & Kumar goes to White Castle??? Empire State Building
Times Square
Toys"R"Us
Statue of Liberty
Wall St
South Street Seaport
Ground Zero

Central Park...

To begin with, please change your passports to the biometric ones before travelling to US!!! I almost got refused entry but that's a long story.
July 20...
As soon as we reached the bus terminal in New York, we ate brunch! I had a ham and cheese omelette set (the cheese was damn good)! After that, we walked around downtown before checking into our hostel (Jazz on the Park) which was located at north-west of Central Park. We stayed in a 12-bed female dorm. After checking in, we explored more of downtown which includes Broadway, Empire State Building, Times Square, etc. Times Square is SUPER HAPPENING at night. Superbly vibrant city with neon lights all over! The Toys"R"Us there is spectacular and it even has a big ferris wheel inside and themed toy displays!!!
July 21...
We started the day by sightseeing at the south side of Manhattan Island! We were at Brooklyn for a moment (missed our train stop)! We saw the Statue of Liberty, Ground Zero, Wall St, South Street Seaport and the Brooklyn bridge. We saw the matinee for Les Miserables. Touching story with many lessons to be learnt and characters to be sympathized/empathized. I could hear much sniffing as the performance took place. Need I say more? After that, we headed to Central Park to take a look. It's HUGE so we covered only about half of it!

Cosette in Les Miserables - Castle On A Cloud
There is a castle on a cloud,
I like to go there in my sleep,
Aren't any floors for me to sweep,
Not in my castle on a cloud.
There is a room that's full of toys,
There are a hundred boys and girls.
Nobody shouts or talks too loud,
Not in my castle on a cloud.

There is a lady all in white,
Holds me and sings a lullaby,
She's nice to see and she's soft to touch,
She says, "Cosette, I love you very much!"
There is a place where no one's lost,
There a place where no one cries,
Crying, at all, is not allowed,
Not in my castle on a cloud.

Well, it's my father's birthday... HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

Dinner-of-the-Day

This was my dinner! Shared it with Audrey! It's C$10.20 inclusive of tax! The sen1 mian4 in Singapore is so much better!!! Was thinking of zi2 cha4 today (BBQ stingray, BBQ prawns, BBQ squid, kangkong, oyster with egg, etc). Audrey told me to try mingyen at Lau Pa Sat and so I shall when I return!!!
Studying hard for Psychology (ok, trying to). It's damn interesting!!! Have I said this before??? I reckon I did. Heading to that Superpower Nation over the weekend!!! Hehe.
pQ best.. Her email subject heading is "Hi" and the content is "Hi". Ok, my reply is "Hi". HAHA. WTH LAR. What a peach!
Oh, anyway, I'm not considering an overseas Industrial Attachment at all (don't get me wrong, Toronto's quite fun and happening). However, I have my reasons:
  1. I have to spend more time with my gun
  2. I have commitment to Air Weapons Club
  3. Most importantly, the job scopes for the ones in Singapore are more interesting and relevant to what I want to do in the future
  4. Some other miscellaneous reasons!

Look After You by The Fray
If I don't say this now I will surely break
As I'm leaving the one I want to take
Forgive the urgency but hurry up and wait
My heart has started to separate.
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
Oh..
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
I'll look after you
There now, steady love, so few come and don't go
Will you won't you, be the one I'll always know
When I'm losing my control, the city spins around
You're the only one who knows, you slow it down
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
Oh..
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
I'll look after you
If ever there was a doubt
My love she leans into me
This most assuredly counts
She says most assuredly
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
Oh..
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
I'll look after you
It's always have and never hold
You've begun to feel like home
What's mine is yours to leave or take
What's mine is yours to make your own
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
Oh..
Oh, Oh
Be my baby
I'll look after you

Dinner-of-the-Day

Welcome to the Science Library...
MINE.

I had my mid-term test for my Geology module today! It was ok I guess (considering how I studied and how much I studied). Well, there's a time to slack, so I'm slacking! The power of S/U. It's difficult to motivate myself to study here! Ok, University of Toronto's academic standing is ranked better than NUS so HMM... They use the bell-curve too (but it isn't employed in the same way).

Anyway, after our tests, Izzati, Huixin, Audrey and I went for dinner at an Italian restaurant at Balswin St. Wah, the pastas were GREAT and the Tartufo dessert was EXCELLENT!!! WAH. Ok, not the cheapest place in the world but food makes me happy so what the heck!

Food-of-the-Day

My microwaved lunch!Dinner: Sushi.. C$9.11 after taxes. Tsk.

Well, spent the day mugging for the test tomorrow! Half-way through dinner now. Going to mug a little bit more!

Transient..

How difficult it is to predict life.
How things change,
Sometimes desirable,
Sometimes less than desirable.
It's weird,
It's scary,
How lives can intertwine at some point,
Yet become parallel in time,
Never to intersect.
Like vines that intertwine,
Perhaps it makes us stronger.
Perhaps there's a reason,
A purpose.
Perhaps not.
Maybe we should long for distance,
Maybe we should long for superficiality,
Maybe, just maybe, we should cancel vulnerability,
Not needing parallel lives should things change.
...
One lifetime.. and beyond.
Are fleeting events worth the trouble at all???

Runaway Train by Soul Asylum
Call you up in the middle of the night
Like a firefly without a light
You were there like a blowtorch burning
I was a key that could use a little turning
So tired I couldn't even sleep
So many secrets I couldn't keep
I promised myself I wouldn't weep
One more promise I couldn't keep
It seems no one can help me now,
I'm in too deep; there's no way out
This time I have really led myself astray
Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Can you help me remember how to smile?
Make it somehow all seem worthwhile
How on earth did I get so jaded?
Life's mystery seems so faded
I can go where no one else can go
I know what no one else knows
Here I am just a-drownin' in the rain
With a ticket for a runaway train
And everything seems cut and dried,
Day and night, earth and sky,
Somehow I just don't believe it
Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Bought a ticket for a runaway train
Like a madman laughing at the rain
A little out of touch, a little insane
It's just easier than dealing with the pain
Runaway train, never going back
Wrong way on a one-way track
Seems like I should be getting somewhere
Somehow I'm neither here nor there
Runaway train, never coming back
Runaway train, tearing up the track
Runaway train, burning in my veins
I run away but it always seems the same

Dinner-of-the-Day

Hmm.. Started Slack Sunday with an unhealthy breakfast consisting of bacon, sausages, hashbrowns, scrambled eggs, a bagel (cream cheese; raspberry jam), grapfruit and juice (I mixed cranberry with grapefruit, nice)!

Lunch was cheesesticks and an organic chocolate bar (no, I'm not into organic food; they gave this out free at the Farmers' Market).
I got take-out for dinner from a nearby Chinese restaurant. It's duck rice! I'm trying to eat my usual way by finishing the rice first followed by the meat and finally, the vegetables. Do you think I can do it?! FYI, the styrofoam box they pack this in is LARGER than the ones found in SG. This may well be 2 portions of duck rice back in SG. Well well. I really NEED someone to share the food with me!
And no, I did not spend the whole day eating! I've been (and will be) mugging for my mid-term test on Tuesday!!!

City-of-the-Day

Stratford is just out of Toronto.
The Avon River is calming.
On the bus to Stratford.. COWS.
Steak!!! Nice! BEAVER at the Avon River!
I love beavers!!!
Ducklings and their mama.
Cygnets (that's what the young of swans are called)!
There's a duckie in the background!
Romantic?
Our bed and breakfast place.
We had scones, WAFFLES, fruits and tea for breakfast!
Where we had lunch..
Lunch!
That's the sun. Nice sky???
I'm just going to post one entry for both Fri and Sat!

Friday the 13th...

I set off for Stratford in the morning! I had to transfer bus at Kitchener and had some time to check out Kitchener. When I arrived at Stratford bus depot, I immediately realized the importance of map reading skills. Luckily I can read maps. I didn't know the bus depot was SO ULU and FAR from town. Well, if you're going to Stratford, RENT A CAR. SERIOUSLY. I took half a lifetime walking around. Tsk. Everyone drives there. There's no sign of homeless people there as well. It's a small townish place (although they call it City of Stratford), it's very different from the cities that we know of.

Hmm, spent most of the day just strolling and sitting by the river! Anyway, Monika and I watched King Lear (with A+ seats) so it was DAMN SHIOK. It was excellent. This is my first time watching an English play (believe it or not, the first play I watched was in Chinese).

Saturday the 14th..

We started the day with a 2-hour historical tour of Stratford. Very interesting!!! Spent the rest of the day looking at the shops there! Cold, cold, cold day. VERY COLD. I thought it was winter.
