Movie-of-the-Day

What's funnier is Yy's reaction to Big Grace in the back!
That's one weird sign.

Yep, it's all NeWater.

Went NeWater plant today!!! Excursion!!!

Watched movie with Sandra this evening! Watched "Confessions of a Shopaholic" and it had great entertainment value!

We had drunken prawns, spicy spaghetti with prawns and durian fried rice! The food was reasonably priced and GOOD! The durian fried rice is DAMN DAMN nice. There's bits of durian in it yet the rice stay separate as it should be! Ate at Pin Si Cafe at AMK Hub!

Submission-of-the-Day

Thesis submission.. TODAY! I survived.

Acknowledgments
(an extension of the acknowledgments written in my thesis)

I would like to extend my heartfelt gratitude to several persons for the support that was given to me. I would like to thank all my FST coursemates, and lab technician, Xiao Hui, for the generous food supply and always feeding me when I'm dying of starvation or when I'm eating something that they think I shouldn't be eating (e.g. bread); Mr HHY, for pleasantly surprising lunch/dinner deliveries; my father, for a constant supply of snacks (sausage/fishballs/pisang goreng) every night from the pasa malam; Jan & Pat for constantly checking on my sanity level and everyone else who has wished me well on my FYP.

Program-of-the-Day

Managed to figure out how to use ChemSketch in the first instant. I had the program since Year 2 but never figured out how to use it. Recently, I was supposed to use it for some lab report but I still didn't know how to get it to work. This time I needed it for FYP and the moment I opened it, I started using it like I was farmiliar with it. Gosh. I was amazed. By God's grace really. If not for that, I'd spend half a lifetime figuring that out. I was all ready with my IE window open to an online tutorial for ChemSketch which I didn't have to use at all!

Video-of-the-Day

Ever since I watched American Beauty, I occasionally have this vision of a plastic bag dancing in the wind. It's so captivating and mesmerizing to witness this. It's.. beautiful.

Market-of-the-Day

There's a pasa malam at my place! Visited it yesterday! Nowadays they include games at the pasa malam! Felt like playing but did not do so since (1) I feel a bit old for this; (2) it's a little awkward if you play the games alone and (3) felt that it was a waste of $$$. I like the food there though!

Baking-of-the-Day

Had no mood to bake today. It was the most fun lab this entire academic year but I just have no mood to bake amidst the stress from FYP. So I was mainly walking between the food and non food-grade labs, toggling between baking and the experiment in the lab on chemical leavening agents. My group had 5 people so I was not really needed! LOL.

Dream-of-the-Day or maybe.. Night

Dreams... are my reality.

I keep dreaming about the same thing every night for the past few days. Keep dreaming about Titus.. Dreamt that he never died just that I thought he died. Dreamt of him over and over. So weird.

Trivia-of-the-Day

So much trivia?? I basically do my FYP everyday and almost every moment I'm awake so.. pretty boring to report that! Therefore, MORE TRIVIA!

Today's trivia's on the famous coke and mentos thing!

If you drop a tube of Mentos into a two litre bottle of diet Coke, you get a fountain of diet Coke!

Well, this happens as Mentos have lots of little ridges on the surface (even though it SEEMS to be visually smooth). These act as nucleation points where the carbon dioxide dissolved in the Coke can rapidly form bubbles. As the Mentos sinks, these bubbles rise through the liquid and agitate the Coke which creates more bubbles.

Why diet? Diet Coke has a lower surface tension than Coke which is filled with sugar. The lower surface tension allows the bubbles to grow more rapidly. Gum arabic which coats the Mentos acts as a surfactant, lowering the surface tension of the liquid further.

13-of-the-Day

It's Friday the 13th! Some APW kids hung out at my place this evening. Ate home-cooked food! Best food I've eaten all week (except for Sakae)! Tried the red wine Moscato! Nice! There was enough people to share the wine with so it was drunk in very good portion! A rather relaxing evening in contrast with the hectic week(s)!! Weird thought.. But I felt that I was in safe company. Hmm.

(More)Trivia-of-the-Day

More on beer!

Why is the colour of the beer head white when beer is golden brown?!

Well, it's due to the way that light travels through the beer head. The foam is composed of many bubbles in close proximity and each bubble is a pocket of gas (the bubbles ain't air.. they form due to lower vapour pressure as compared with the surrounding parts of the beer) surrounded by a thin layer of beer. Light is scattered, reflected and refracted in various directions as it travels through the mass of bubbles. Light that exits the foam and enters your eyes is a mix of all different wavelengths and therefore appears white.

Trivia-of-the-Day

Did you know?

The beer head usually disappears faster when a lady consumes beer than when a guy drinks it! This is due to ladies wear lipstick which has oil in it and upon contact with the bubbles in the beer head, it destabilizes the foam! This happens for any kind of oil, which upon contact with the foam will cause punctures in the protein layer surrounding and stabilising the bubbles in the foam.

Try to observe this phenomenon the next time you're at a pub!

And yes, I learned this in a food science class!

Table-of-the-Day

Wow, seems like the table I share with Big Grace is the centre for food! All the peeps in my Hons class place their food at this centre for everyone to share! There's so much variety! The best things about doing my FYP is that everyone's in it together and the communal sharing of food.

Food-of-the-Day

Ate some nicer food at Sakae with HY this evening! Hmm. Surimi (fish cake) is expensive!!! Then again, you need fresh and good quality fish to make surimi.. so... fair enough!

There are seven groups of plastic polymers and each group may be identified by its Plastic Identification code (PIC) which is the triangle thing at the bottom of your plastic container with a number in the middle!

1: Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET, PETE)
2: High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)
3: Polyvinyl Chloride (V)
4: Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)
5: Polypropylene (PP) >> microwaveable ware!
6: Polystyrene (PS)
7: Other

Lab-of-the-Day

I ended lab late today but we got to submit the report on the spot! Took an hour to do it there but would take an average of 6H on a report.. So I saved 5h! YEAH. Proposal to prof went through. Then, had to do another lab for another module so stayed till 7+pm. Hmm. And made some stranger wait for me for an hour. Gosh.

Story-of-the-Day

Once in a monastery two monks walked about doing their morning duties. As they passed a small bowl, filled with rain, they saw a scorpion was drowning in the water. One monk reached in to save the creature. As soon as his fingers touched the panicking Scorpion, it stung him and the monk dropped the Scorpion back into the water. The monk sighed, and reached back in. This time he got his grip a little firmer, but still dropped the Scorpion when he was stung. He kept reaching in, as his friend looked on in confusion. After dozens of attempts, the other monk spoke up saying “Brother, why do you keep trying to save that scorpion? It stings you every time you come near it” the monk paused before reaching in again. As another sting bit into his hand, he smiled “Because it is his nature to sting, and my nature to save. Don’t forget brother, soon either I’ll stop feeling the pain of the sting and he will be saved, or he will stop being afraid and be saved. Compassion cannot be stopped so easily.’

You don't have to alter your nature according to external influences. "If a devil can't change it's nature, it's needless for an angel to do it."

Nice guys finish last.

Shoot-of-the-Day

Shot HTNS Monthly Shoot today. 355/400. Food is very important. Very. Noisy stomach again. So embarrassing! Heh. I ate. I ate.... I just don't know how much I have to eat to keep it quiet. Darn. I need the chicken rice diet again.

Slowly, but surely.
